Last Wednesday, just days before Christmas, Carol Browner, Obama's radical Climate Czar, announced new EPA restrictions for mercury, arsenic, and other toxic substances being outputted into the atmosphere by coal-fired power plants. Compliance is required before 2014. Hailed as a victory by environmentalists, it is expected that it could mean the demise of nearly 60 existing coal-fired power plants with upwards of 22 million customers being affected; mostly in the already beaten up and declining cities and states in what is known as the Rust Belt. Some communities could see their power bills rise by as much as 30%. Most of the country may see rates go up by 10% as this nation's nearly 600 coal-fired power producing facilities are retrofitted with expensive new or modified smokestack "scrubbers" that will be needed to drastically reduce these types of emissions.
Of course, Obama and his EPA could care less about the impact on energy prices and the fact that thousands may lose their jobs in what is already a slow economy. Instead, they claim that their actions are all about saving lives and preventing illness. The "straw man" that they want us to believe in is that their new coal regulations will prevent illnesses like asthma and the effects of mercury and arsenic poisoning and any resulting deaths. Yes, it is true that the number of asthma cases in the U.S. has risen significantly over the years and The EPA would have you believe that those numbers can be reduced by the new regulations. But, in direct contradiction to this, our dependence on coal-fired power production has been steadily declining for two decades since a modified version of the Clean Air Act went into effect in 1990 to reduce acid rain emissions from any coal burning activities.
At one time, almost all electricity in this country was being produced from coal. Today, coal is only responsible for about 49% of this nation's electrical power. The reason is simple. It is too time consuming and costly to maintain any existing coal-fired power plants and to build new ones. For the existing base, the cost to keep up with ever-changing EPA rules and regulations is just too punitive. For any new power generating facilities, there are too many months needed to get EPA licensing. Then, if a power company does manage to get a "go-ahead" from the EPA, there's usually years of court battles with environmental organizations like the Sierra Club and/or Greenpeace. For most power companies, natural gas has become the clear choice over coal. It's easier to get licensing and it typically avoids lengthy environmental court action. More importantly, natural gas, through efficiencies and new finds, has become more competitively priced to what had been previously unbeatable coal prices.
So, with the power companies, themselves, already policing coal out of business, why this new ruling and why now? Why an unreasonable two year compliance mandate? I'm quite sure that the EPA didn't just, all of a sudden, connect the dots on the health risks of burning coal. And, if there truly is a deadly health risk, why did it take 3 years into the Obama Administration before the EPA decided to act on saving lives?
To me, the purpose, the timing, and the compliance requirements of this EPA ruling have "politics" written all over it. First of all, the new regulations conveniently appeal to Obama's environmental voting base in what is the beginning of an election year. Secondly, the decision comes just a little over 10 months away from the next Presidential election. As a consequence, the negative impact on jobs and energy prices are being held off, presumably, until Obama has been reelected. After all, if the EPA had implemented these new regulations in Obama's first year in office, higher electricity rates and job losses would have already been apparent; jeopardizing Obama's reelection bid. Also, the 2-year, forced compliance to the new emissions standard insures that there won't be enough time for the power industry to retrofit all of it's existing coal plants; forcing them to take many of those plants out of service. This also insures that the power industry won't have the needed time to replace those lost plants with any new and compliant facilities. Two years isn't enough time to get EPA approvals let alone have the needed 3 to 5 years to build a new power plant. Thus, brownouts can be expected. In turn, angry customers and public utility commissions will force the power companies to replace the lost power with expensive wind and solar facilities which you can expect to sail through the EPA approval process and, which, can be built in substantially less time than any brick-and-mortar, natural gas power plant.
Back in 2008, when a, then-Senator, Barack Obama was running for the presidency, he unabashedly said that it was his intent to "bankrupt" the coal industry and, in so doing, necessarily cause electricity prices to "skyrocket." That's why this EPA action is no surprise. The truly sad thing about this is that countless numbers of poorer Americans will suffer by forcing them to make "dire" choices between paying their energy bills or paying for their housing, food, clothing, and health care. All of this so Obama can get reelected by appealing to his own radical environmental political base.

Casting Doubt To Save Their Butts
Since last Tuesday, the Democratic pundits have been spinning as hard as they ever have to cast as much doubt as possible on the Republicans chance of winning Congressional, Senate and Gubernatorial races in November. The latest and most laughable came yesterday, from an Op-Ed writer for the Washington Post, Harold Meyerson. His editorial commentary, Calif. GOP primary winners look headed for defeat, seems to focus on the fact that Carly Fiorina and Meg Whitman had to run so far to the right during their primaries that they are now unelectable right-wing radicals.
But, to understand why someone like Meyerson would think that Meg Whitman and Carly Fiorina are radicals, you need to understand where Mr. Meyerson stands politically. Harold Myerson's father was the leader of the California Chapter of the extremely left and near-communist, Socialist Party of America. And, like pops, Harold is an avowed, far-left socialist. The fact is that Myerson is so left that even some center-left Democrats look like right-wingers to him. Further, he seems to think that the Democratic competition to Whitman and Florina -- Jerry 'Moonbeam' Brown and Barbara Boxer -- are more electable because, somehow, they are more appealing as centrists. But, given his extreme political views, he can't seem to see how far left these people really are.
All of this Whitman and Fiorina talk of un-electability is a desperate attempt by the left to convince voters that casting a ballot for either of them would be a wasted vote because they aren't going to win. However, what Meyerson and many like him don't seem to understand is that the odds are more in favor of a Republican win due to the Democrat's failures to bail this country out of it's economic morass in both Sacramento and Washington, D.C. Proof of that fact comes from a poll taken by Rasmussen yesterday that shows Jerry Brown and Meg Whitman in a statistical tie with Brown getting 45% of the count and Whitman with 44% and an all-important undecided vote of 7% that could go either way by election day. This, in a state where the number of registered Democrats almost outpace the Republicans by a factor of 2 to 1. Obviously, these early numbers seem to prove Meyerson's theory wrong.

The Worst Possible Presidential Cabinet For Our Times
In recent weeks, a lot has been said and written about Obama's ineptness and complete lack of management skills. But, the lack of experience and expertise in addressing the problems that currently face this country go well beyond the President. It goes deep into the cabinet members that he has selected.
Obama has completely surrounded himself with a bunch of cabinet officers who have no management experience. Instead, he has created a cabinet that is completely theoretical and professorial. Worse yet, almost all of these people are anti-capitalists and pro-environmentalists. This, at a time, when we're trying to recover from a recession and when we are now faced with one of the worst environmental disasters that the world has every seen. Most of his appointees have spent their entire lives fighting Wall Street, the banks, big business, and the oil, coal, and gas industries. Yet, these are the industries that they are being asked to work with in their various cabinet positions.
This complete lack of experience and understanding has manifested itself in a variety of ways since Obama took office.
First, we have the failed stimulus package because it was too pro-government, too socialist, too anti-business, and completely ignored the vital elements that would actually help drive this economy and create jobs.
Then, take, for example, John Morton, the Assistant Secretary who is in charge of ICE (Immigration and Customs Enforcement). Recently, he told a newspaper interviewer that he had no intention of working with Arizona if illegal immigrants are handed over to any of his agents. So, in effect, he was saying the he would no longer fulfill the responsibilities of his own job because of his ideological attitude towards the newly passed Arizona law on illegal immigration. Obviously this man doesn't take seriously the "Enforcement" responsibilities that are clearly spelled out and included in the very title of the agency that he manages. After all, it isn't the Immigration and Customs "Non-Enforcement" agency!
The same, too, is true of the massive BP oil spill. There is no coordination among cabinet members and no centralized control from Obama. For example, one agency has directed BP to use dispersants to break up the oil. Days later, another agency, the EPA, says no to dispersants. Then, for whatever reason, the EPA suddenly changes saying its ok to use them. Then, because dispersants have been used, OSHA says workers involved in cleanup procedures have to take breaks every 15 minutes to avoid getting ill. All along, Bobby Jindal had requested permission to build sand berms to provide protection from the ravages of the oil, however the EPA and the Army Corp of Engineers ate up valuable time because they were "programmed" (as in non-emergency times) to conduct an environmental impact study before giving approval.
Thursday, there was another perfect example of why these people that Obama has surrounded himself with should have never been allowed to be in charge of anything. Some days after it was finally recognized that the spill could be a serious environmental disaster, Obama convened a panel of experts to review the situation and come up with recommendations for addressing it. This panel actually reported up to Obama through Ken Salazar; his Secretary of the Interior. Following a review, the panel wrote up their recommendations in a report. But, unbeknownst to the panel, Ken Salazaar, at the direction of the White House (?), wrote into the report, a non-scientific and politically motivated opinion that all new and unfinished offshore drilling should be stopped; and, Obama acted on it. Now, we find out that the panel would have never made such a recommendation because to stop the drilling and idle these platforms could literally be dangerous (Click here to See Story: Experts Say White House 'Misrepresented' Views to Justify Drilling Moratorium). At the very least, thousands of rig workers and support personnel are now without jobs because of Salazar's personal recommendation. Additionally, those rigs, if idled too long, will be towed elsewhere in the world. They contain some highly sensitive technologies that were developed by the United States and, as a result, could result in the loss of any competitive edge that these afford in deep water drilling.
The Salazar (maybe Carole Browner) stunt shows what can happen when you have an agency headed up by an individual who has had an axe to grind with an industry that he/she is responsible for overseeing. This kind of mindset shows why Obama had never met with or even talked to BP's CEO prior to next week's hurriedly scheduled meeting that only resulted out of public outrage.
Watching this mess unfold, one can't help but get the feeling that we have given the keys to this country, to an immature President and a group of children. As a result, I think that history will record this administration's cabinet as being the worst possible to meet the challenges of our time.

Does Anyone Remember Alan Carlin?
If you don't recall Alan Carlin, all you have to do is read my blog post of July 5th of this year: The EPA Report Obama Doesn't Want You To See.
When I wrote that blog, it had just been learned that Obama's new EPA head had tossed Alan Carlin's 98-page report under the bus because it dared to question the science and premise of global warming. Just like the e-mail suppression by the scientific thugs associated with ClimateGate at the University of East Anglia and the U.N.'s Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, Mr. Carlin's very scientific and extremely thorough report was being suppressed. This time by Obama and his science thugs in the EPA.
Like ClimateGate, it just proves that Obama and his people aren't interested in the truth; especially when that "Truth" is so "Inconvenient" to their radical agenda. This was reinforced on Wednesday when the following article appeared in the news headlines: "Obama science officials defend warming research". Obviously, the cover-up continues.

ClimateGate and Its Parallels To RatherGate
Dan Rather was hell bent on destroying the character and, possibly, any historical legacy of the George W. Bush presidency. So much so, that he was willing to use falsified documents as the basis of his attack. In the RatherGate scandal, Dan Rather aired documents on the 60 Minutes II news program that showed that George W. Bush was being reprimanded by his then-Air National Guard Commander, Lt. Col. Jerry Killian, for his poor performance as a National Guard pilot. Other documents implied that Bush failed to get his annual physical and that Killian had been pressured by Bush Senior to sugarcoat Bush the younger's poor performance. However, good internet-driven detective work ultimately proved that all the documents were concocted years later on a PC and that they were never hand typed on a typewriter; the only text producing mechanism of that era. Yet, to this day, Rather still says he was right about Bush's substandard National Guard service; although he has no valid facts to support his belief. Killian, himself, died long before the airing of the "60 Minutes" piece and conveniently couldn't verify the supposed truth of those documents.
In a similar vein, we now have ClimateGate where thousands of previously secreted emails are showing that a core group of scientists have been manipulating data and suppressing peer review for almost two decades in order to substantiate the alarm over global warming. But, it appears, the science behind global warming is just as flawed as those documents in RatherGate. And, just as in the case of Dan Rather having never denied his actions, the political left is still in denial by saying that anthropogenic global warming is real; regardless of what those emails seem to clearly imply.
Just last Friday, Carol Browner, Obama's Climate Czar, in a Dan Rather-esk moment, said that all those damning e-mails "change little" (Click to See Full Story: "Climate czar says e-mails change little"). She, instead, said she is sticking with the 2500 scientists who believe global warming is caused by mankind. However, Ms. Browner appears to be ignoring the near 31,000 scientists who have signed a petition that rejects the current science over global warming (Click to See "Petition Project" website). It also ignores the 650+ scientists who abandoned the global warming consortium of scientists because it was a "lie" (Click to See this December 2008 Story: "650 to dissent at U.N. climate change conference to abandon global warming “lie”). Many of whom were once part of Browner's 2500. One of the most prophetic dissenting statements of a year ago came from the award winning U.N. IPCC Japanese Scientist Dr. Kiminori Itoh -- a very prominent one of Browner's supposed "2500" -- who said: "Warming fears are the...worst scientific scandal in history... When people come to know what the truth is, they will feel deceived by science and scientists.” Now, we actually have the emails that support his claim.
Science, like journalism, is supposed to be a search for truth and understanding. But, today, it appears that both science and journalism have been hijacked by left-wing ideology. This attitude is firmly reinforced by the fact that the left-wing, main stream media of this country have completely ignored this ClimateGate scandal. The only true news agencies that are even reporting on this are Fox News and the Wall Street Journal.

Global Warming Is Being Served Up Over Ice
All too often, we have all seen the same old scene being played out. Al Gore (figuratively) dons his not-so-little "Chicken Little" costume and begins running around and wildly screaming: "The ice is melting. The ice is melting."
As long as I can remember, the believers in Global Warming have been predicting the eventual sales of ocean front property in the heart of downtown Manhattan or at the foothills of the San Bernadino Mountains in Southern California. That's because they all believe that Global Warming will cause the unbridled loss of sea ice and it will flood the shorelines of America and the rest of world as the level of the earth's oceans rise as much as 30, 60, or 90 feet or more; depending on how outrageous the "warmists" feel that day and depending upon which flawed Global Warming study they most recently read.
For years, all those left-wing scientists of the Global Warming ilk have had their tape measures out, along with their mighty magnifying glasses, and they have measured every drip, drip, drip of melting sea ice around the world. They have sounded the alarms over the devastating floods that are "sure" to come. Then, the liberal news media gives them cover with op-ed's and news stories that support their predicted doom. Our nightly news teams will run stories along with videos of massive chunks of ice that are falling off of glaciers and dumping into our seas; even though these "ice events" have being occurring, over-and-over, for thousand of years.
Amid all these efforts towards their "hopeful" destruction of the earth due Global Warming, they seem to have a blind eye when the news is a lot more contrary to their ideological beliefs and their "Ice Is Melting!" rantings.
In reality, the sea ice, around the world, has returned to levels not seen since 1979 (Click to See Full Story: "Sea Ice Ends Year at Same Level as 1979"). This is "the" report you will "never" hear or see on NBC/MSNBC or read in the New York Times. Instead, all you will ever hear is those stories that would "support" the ideological march to "Cap and Trade" and other clamp-downs on human activity.
Then, too, there was this little news flash that was published in April of this year: "Antarctic ice is growing, not melting away". Since Antarctica has 90% of the world's ice, you would have thought this story would really get some press. However, once again, it wasn't even reported by any of the major news media outlets of this nation; except, of course, by the chief political nemesis of Obama and the Democrats: Fox News (Click to See Full Story).
The "real story" is that these two stories tell the real truth behind the Global Warming movement. The fact that these stories of ice expanding are being ignored by the liberal media just shows that there is an ideological agenda being promoted and, that there might not be any real or immediate threat to humanity.
As I have said all along, it isn't really about the science. It's all about the environmentalists using CO2 and Global Warming as the tool to stop human activity and any further expansion into nature.
Even the health care bill in Congress has a Global Warming component. When I wrote "Is A Real-Life Soylent Green Society Just Around The Corner?", I was primarily talking about a green adviser to Gordon Brown, Jonathon Porritt, in the United Kingdom who believes that the population must be cut in half to save the planet. But, since then, it appears that Obama has hired his own possible "Soylent Green" believing Czars: Anthony Jones, Ezekiel Emmanuel, Carol Browner, and John Holdren. Each of these people seem to have similar beliefs (more or less) that mankind should be controlled or even eliminated. And, all might have had some role in advising Obama and Congress on health care.
I guess I'm a little tired of the constant push by the left to say that Global Warming is a "settled science" and that there should be no further debate. But, as I pointed out above, nothing could be farther from the truth. The science clearly shows that nothing is "settled" on Global Warming.
