Trump's Mexico Wall in a World Divided by Walls

Starting in the 1950's, after World War II, and then following 9/11 and the rise of terrorism, the building of border walls has surged, as noted by the following graph from the Migration Policy Institute:

Currently, Saudi Arabia is building a 600-mile wall along its border with Iraq to keep ISIS out.  Another nearly 600-mile wall is being built by Turkey to keep Syrian refugees from overrunning its border.  Spain has an expansive wall to stop Moroccans from entering.  Walls also exist between India and Pakistan; South and North Korea; India and Bangladesh; and the list goes on.

Decades ago, the poet Robert Frost wrote 'Mending Wall'.  The poem opened with the line "Something there is that doesn’t love a wall" and also contained these words: "Good fences make good neighbors". Many falsely believed that Frost was arguing for the building of walls.  However, 'Mending Walls' was actually an anti-wall literary work.  Take this line as an example: "Before I built a wall I’d ask to know what hat I was walling in or walling out, And to whom I was like to give offense".

Those last words could be no truer then now.  Trump's wall with Mexico is obviously being built with the intent of  "walling out" illegals, drugs, and gangs coming in via Mexico.  But, there is a cost in that -- like the poem states -- the wall "was like to give offense" to our neighboring country, Mexico.

To me, walls are ugly divisions among societies.  A major 1800 mile wall on our southern border would be just that. I would prefer to use existing laws to crack down on employers who attract illegal aliens into the country for employment.  We should also change our immigration laws, so that legal, migrant workers can enter.  These two changes would greatly reduce work for illegals, and, as we saw during the Great Recession, many returned home due to the lack of jobs.  Also, by this point, we should be able to use technology in order to avoid the building of an actual physical wall.  Just my opinion.

Hillary Panders to the Latinos with Soft Stance on Illegal Immigration

In stump speech after stump speech, Hillary Clinton has criticized Donald Trump's promise to build a wall on our southern border.  By contrast, she believes that, instead of building walls, we should "build bridges".  She also said in a victory speech: "We should be breaking down barriers, not building walls". So, what does all that mean?  One big fat bridge across the Rio Grande River, and other places, so that illegals can freely walk into this country?

In a recent speech in Phoenix and in front of a predominately Latino crowd, she specifically called out Arizona Sheriff Joe Arpaio for arresting and jailing illegal immigrants, saying this is treating “fellow human beings with disrespect and contempt.”  As if someone coming  here illegally is not a crime.

So, in those three statement, you are immediately left with the impression that Hillary would allow the free flow of illegals; never fearing arrests.  That's not the policy in Mexico, where the immigration laws are even stricter than ours. Entering and staying in Mexico is a crime punishable by 2 years in prison.  So is document fraud or marriage fraud.  And, if you return after being deported, you get 10 years.  Even if you are able to get legal permission to stay, the Mexican government has the right to boot you back home without notice or cause.  How's that for treating “fellow human beings with disrespect and contempt.”

While most illegals are here to only find work that isn't afforded them in Mexico and other countries, there are those who would do this country harm.  Gang members such as MS13. Or, even terrorists.  Hillary needs to wake up to that fact.  We have one of the most generous immigration systems in the world.  Because of reasonable and logical quotas, some must wait years before entering our country.  For Hillary and all too many Democrats, they believe it is fair that some should bypass the legal immigration process so that she can garner votes from other Hispanics in the U.S..  She would place our safety and security in jeopardy; just as she did with her private email server.

Why the Saudis Fear ISIS and Iran

To most people, Saudi Arabia represents a wealthy country based on decades of being the world's leader in the extraction of oil.  But, within the religion of Islam, they have something of much greater value than oil. Saudi Arabia is home to the most holy cities of Mecca and Medina.   Mecca is where the Prophet Mohammed was born and began writing the Qur'an. It is the responsibility of every Muslim to make a pilgrimage to this holiest of places within their lifetime.  Medina is where the Prophet is buried and was, when he was alive, the capital of the Muslim empire.

So, if you are ISIS and want to create a true Islamic State or Caliphate, it must include Mecca and Medina.  Also, Iran believes in the coming of the 12th and final Imam and, as such, Shia and Sunni Muslims must be unified under Shia rule.  This is why Iran is actively supporting a Shia takeover in Iraq, Yemen, Syria, and Libya.   And, for sure, and at some point, Iran will set their sights on Sunni Saudi Arabia and Jordan; a goal that is only solidified if Iran has nuclear weapons because having the bomb insulates them from attacks by stronger Sunni countries such as Saudi Arabia.  Also, understand that Iran having control of Iraq, Yemen, Syria, and Libya is, in a way, attempting to surround both Sunni countries of Saudi Arabia and Jordan.

The Saudis clearly understand this threat.  Currently, they are building an extremely fortified  600-mile wall along the Iraq border to protect themselves from an ISIS invasion.  A similar wall is being built  along the Yemeni border to shield themselves from a possible Houthis Shia invasion from Yemen.   It is also the reason that Saudi Arabia has created a coalition of 10 countries to restore Sunni control of Yemen and beat back the Shia Houthis.

At issue, now, is whether or not that same coalition will eventually turn on Iran in an attempt to keep them from ever getting the bomb.  In fact, Obama's nuke deal may have just solidified that very possibility.  But, even if the Saudis don't lead a war against Iran, there is a very real possibility that the  President's deal will create a rush of Sunni countries, lead by Saudi Arabia, to have their own nuclear weapons as a matter of self defense.

Simply, there has never been a worse time for peace in the Middle East because the United States has created a vacuum for ISIS and Iran to walk all over Sunni countries in the region.  It is possible that in less than two years, an all out Middle East war could ensue, or as rumored, the Saudis may allow Israel access to their airspace to launch a defensive attack on Iran's nuclear facilities.   A fact that previously would have never been possible had Iran not been given a pathway to the bomb under the current nuke deal.
